Batteries
Deep Cycle Batteries are designed to be discharged down as much as 80% time after time, and have much thicker plates.
The major difference between a true Deep Cycle Battery and others is that the plates are SOLID Lead plates – not sponge.
Sealed Batteries also called Maintenance Free Batteries are made with vents that (usually) cannot be removed. . Sealed Batteries are not totally sealed, as they must allow gas to vent during charging. If overcharged too many times, some of these batteries can lose enough water that they will die before their time.
Gelled Batteries or “Gel Cells” contain acid that has been “gelled” by the addition of Silica Gel. Thereby turning the acid into a solid mass that looks like gooey Jell-O. The advantage of these batteries is that it is impossible to spill acid even if they are broken. However, there are several disadvantages. One is that they must be charged at a slower rate (C/20) to prevent excess gas from damaging the cells. They cannot be fast charged on a conventional automotive charger or they may be permanently damaged. This is not usually a problem with solar electric systems, but if an auxiliary generator or inverter bulk charger is used, current must be limited to the manufacturers specifications.
A newer type of sealed battery uses “Absorbed Glass Mats”, or AGM between the plates. This is a very fine fibre Boron-Silicate glass mat. These type of batteries have all the advantages of gelled, but can take much more abuse. We sell the Concorde (and Lifeline, made by Concorde) AGM batteries. These are also called “starved electrolyte”, as the mat is about 95% saturated rather than fully soaked. That also means that they will not leak acid even if broken.
Inverters
The PV array and battery produces DC current and voltage. If the loads require AC power, an Inverter can be used to convert from DC to AC. Commonly available inverters can output in 1 or 3 phase 50 or 60 hertz and 110 or 220 volt and can range in continuous output power from a few hundred watt to 10kilo watt.
There are three basic types of inverters; they are Square Wave, Modified Sine Wave and Pure Sine Wave. We also have available module inverters for powering home appliances like light, TVs, Computers, radios etc.
Charge Controllers
The charge controller is used to connect a solar panel to a 12 volt lead acid battery, it regulates the charging of the battery and allows the battery to be charged up to a preset voltage. This prevents the battery from over-charging and boiling off electrolyte. The low voltage disconnect is used to connect a load to the same 12 volt lead acid battery, the LVD acts as a smart switch, it auto disconnects the load if the battery voltage falls below a set point. When used together, these circuits keep the battery operating within normal voltage limits which greatly extends the life of the battery.
Solar Pumps
If you are located away from reliable power sources and need to pump water for people, irrigation, livestock, then solar water pumping may be the solution for you. Solar power provides a welcome alternative to fuel burning generators and tedious hand pumps. Over 5,000 solar pumps are working throughout Nigeria. Most of them are community-pumping systems with a 1.5kw Solar Array to supply up to 5,000 gallons of water a day. Also are small system for remote homes, villages and livestock.
Although some systems cost little more than their fuel-powered equivalents, their owners enjoy a reliable power system that require no fuel and very little attention. Vaccine Refrigerators
Rubitec vaccine refrigeration system has four major components.
The photovoltaic modules array which convert sunlight directly into electricity to power the compressor of the vaccine refrigerator.
A properly designed and maintained rechargeable battery subsystem which allow the refrigerator to operate at night or during periods of poor weather condition for a week or more without sunlight.
The charge controller which regulates the flow of electricity to protect the batteries from overcharging and over-discharging, either of which will shorten the lifetime of the battery.
